Look around. Can you find a single area that has no existence of plastic? Well, Plastic is omnipresent. You can find it everywhere- in your kitchen, in your bedroom, in your work place and where not. Plastics are lightweight. Plastics are durable. Plastics can be molded into different shapes. But Plastics are non-biodegradable. They are not easily destructible, and hence, are added to the landfills. Is there any way to reduce plastic pollution and save the environment? Yes, there are a plenty. Even if each of us uses plastic water bottles, environmental impact is something that we must take care of. Let us discuss few of the ways to reduce plastic pollution-
Replace plastic wherever you can- It may sound a bit too much, but if we are looking forward to reduce plastic pollution, this is the only way out. Replace plastic with other material. Use glasses instead of plastic bottles. Carry your Tiffin in a lunch box made of anything else but plastic. You can consider glass made Tiffin boxes that are microwavable. Use stainless steel or brass containers to store and cook food. Microwave-friendly containers can be made of glasses too. Give your children wooden toys which are not as toxic as plastics. As the saying goes ‘charity begins at home’.
Refuse plastics wherever you can- Try to refuse plastics as much as you can. Carry your shopping bag to the grocery shop and avoid asking for single use plastic bags. Do not ask for plastic cutleries from the food stalls. Carry your own plastic bottle and do not buy single use plastic bottles filled with water. Avoid goods that are packed in plastic films. Do not ask for plastic straws.
Recycle as much as you can- You will avoid using plastic items, but the existing ones need a place. You cannot dump the plastics anywhere as it will release toxins, you cannot throw them away in water bodies as that can be much harmful and you cannot burn them as they will release toxins in the air, creating air pollution. All you can do is to recycle the existing plastics. Use old plastic bottles to make flower vases. Make plastic décor items using plastic straws and single use plastic bags.
Reuse the plastic items- Try to use plastic items in your house as much as you can, in as much ways as you can. Reusing them will help in reducing the new demand generation of plastics, eventually helping in reducing the amount of plastic garbage. There’s no denying the fact that the effects of plastic bottles on the environment are too dangerous.
Reduce the plastic footprint- Try each and every way to make the environment a better place to live in. Take small but steady green steps. Teach your children to live and survive without plastics. Avoid using plastics, especially single use plastics. Dump plastic wastes separately as the stray animals take in plastics thinking it is their food. Choose health over convenience, as this is the best way to avoid the menace called plastic.
