Having thrown some light about what plastic bottles actually inflict on us and the environment after its being produced, used, and put away, it’s worthwhile to take a look on what disaster happens behind the curtains even before the bottle comes into the market. Yes! We are talking about manufacturing of PET bottles or plastic elements for that matter. We are aware of the catastrophic effects of plastic pollution and plastic bottle pollution, but here are some startling facts on the manufacturing of the same that we seldom have knowledge.
Oil and Natural Gas Plastic manufacturing requires a huge volume of natural elements as raw materials and the ones that top the list are petroleum and naturals gas! So, what are the real facts? Let’s have a look on those. In the United States alone, over 30 million plastic bags are manufactured annually which requires a staggering 12 million barrels of oil. For all the plastic water bottle manufacturing in the same period, approximately 17 million barrels of oil go down the grave. Additionally, the production process using oil further requires the incineration of fossil fuels which also release around 100 million to 500 million tonnes of carbon in the air, thus only exemplifying the massive damage already we are causing to the environment. Well, a fact to add to this—this amount of carbon emissions generated in plastic production equals the total emission caused by 19 to 92 million vehicles on road. Hence, yes! The very sources of our living—non-renewable sources of energy, world reserves of which are projected to end soon, are being consumed on a colossal basis for the production of something which brings nothing but extinction to humanity and the world around.
Water Well, you read the word quite right. Not only plastic production entitles the usage and wastage of huge amounts of oil and natural gas, it requires massive quantities of water too. Sure, water is a necessary requirement in most manufacturing processes, but to use that in something that is simply danger personified to the planet and to us, is nothing but foolish! Statistics estimate that about 72 billion gallons of water are used annually in the production of plastic! That is surely something to mess with our heads. To reflect more on this monumental water wastage drama that is actually killing our environment slowly and painfully, about 3 litres of water are used in packaging 1 litre of water in a plastic bottle! That’s synonymous to one litre of water being consumed at the cost of 3 litres. Moreover, considering the fact that plastic bottled water is nothing more than tap water in terms of quality and that it’s actually harmful and poisonous to us, it’s high time for people to start being aware of the truth—plastic isn’t cheap; it costs our natural resources, our nature itself, and ultimately our lives.
The Road Ahead Hence, when you hold a plastic bottle in your hand, its harmful effects doesn’t only confine to the term ‘plastic bottle pollution’. The harm starts even before the bottle gets a chance to pollute our surroundings. The moment has come for humanity to pause and ponder! We need to realize the effect of our activities and stop using the cheapest options available in the market. We are responsible to our future generations for our actions, and the time has come to really be so. We need to exemplify our awareness to an extent that the demand for plastic bottles fall to an all-time low, we need to raise our voice against the usage of plastics, and act accordingly at every step. Only then would global decision makers respond and stop the production of these devils. Considering our dependence on the element, it sure isn’t an easy step, but this is absolutely necessary if we want to preserve our planet and the amazing, wonderful life it has been sustaining for billions of years.
