Well, it’s quite unfortunate that we, in our minds, restrict the meaning of plastic pollution to only plastic bottle pollution or the other plastic items that we daily use. But, we seldom forget or forget to care that many other items that escapes common knowledge and the eye have plastic elements as one of its constituents and they are no less harmful than the bottles we have been using before our naked eye. Having established the shocking usage of micro plastics in commonly used toothpastes, skincare creams and the hazardous impact they are having on our environment, let’s take a look at another commonly used plastic that is generally overlooked by the common masses.
Dental Sealants As we know, dental sealants are widely used in dental treatment methods to prevent tooth decays for people of all ages. Teeth often develop fissures in their biting surfaces which are most vulnerable to tooth decays because they are hard to clean areas and food particles adhere to these surfaces. Dental sealants are used in those places to fill up the fissures and make the tooth surface streamlined and easy to clean.
Well, this is exactly where the root of the problem lies. Plastic, being the omnipresent material it is thanks to our own over usage, are commonly used as base materials of the sealants. What’s more; when one goes for tooth replacements, the false tooth provided to us in nothing but simple plastic!!
The Impact Just like any plastic material which is a host to multiple health hazardous, toxic, and potentially cancer causing compounds, these plastic sealants are no exception. The irony is that this time we knowingly put a plastic material right into our tooth, at the closest proximity to the gateway of our inner organs and still somehow don’t bat an eye. We just remain careless about the fact that we have exposed an amalgamation of multiple toxic substances and a ‘champion’ of chronic threat directly to our inner body. Moreover, ask any doctor whether the sealant is to remain at its position intact forever and he/she will say no. Hence, the question evidently pops up that where do those bits of plastic go as the dental sealant or the plastic tooth wears down over time. Yes, it just enters into our body! So, micro plastic particles continue entering into our blood stream as we adopt these sealants and artificial teeth. Imagine what they might cause and what hazardous impact it can pose to our health over the course of years! So, next time you put a sealant on your child and see him having stomach pain after few months, don’t just blame the child and the packet of chips or other fried stuff he perhaps has consumed on his way back from school. The problem might lie much deeper, yet much near to the naked eye. All it takes is a bit of awareness and taking the right step.
The Step of Action Talking about the step, what is the right call of action? Dental sealants are poised to revolutionize tooth decay treatment and plastic materials are used everywhere in the manufacture of these sealants. What could be the alternatives? Over the course of history there were resin based sealants, glass ionomer sealants and more. However, all have now been replaced due to a combination of their disadvantages as the perfect sealant and the veil of plastic that promises to be the cheapest, simplest, and most durable sealant ever. Only the people aware know what lies inside that veil. Hence, we need to become aware and campaign against the usage of plastics as possible sealants so that leading organizations and governments are forced to conduct researches on sealants made from alternative materials. Instead of looking at the cheapest material available that is actually a life-risking agent, we need to force the people responsible to find out alternative, safe approaches to sealant production. Every change needs a mass stand and every mass stand needs individual people to stand together. So, we need to step up against the usage of such toxic materials in clinical treatments and hence promote towards a safer, healthier world. We need to be aware that plastic pollution isn’t just plastic bottle pollution and the roots of the former are much deeper and poses a cumulative threat to life and the world that is beyond imagination.
